Huge numbers now use mobile phones instead of desktop computers to get online -- a development that has spawned whole new business models in China, the world"s biggest Internet market.

Paying to read content on the Web, an outlandish idea as recently as a year ago, is slowly but surely establishing itself as the next business model in the Western media mainstream, spearheaded by Rupert Murdoch"s News Corp (NWSA.O).

But meantime, sales of smartphones -- part of a telecoms economy very different from the PC Web -- are set to outpace sales of desktop computers by 2012, IT research firm Gartner said this week. Some believe it could be as early as this year.

And in China -- which has more Internet users than any other nation -- paid content is a non-starter, says Kai-Fu Lee, a former head of Microsoft"s (MSFT.O) and then Google"s (GOOG.O) China operations who recently quit to run his own company.

"Chinese consumers have a stronger conviction that things should be free, so efforts to charge for premium content have basically completely failed," Lee said at the Abu Dhabi Media Summit this week.

INTERNET"S STRENGTHS

Traditional publishing groups like News Corp, the New York Times (NYT.N) and Axel Springer (SPRGn.DE) have decided recently to take the plunge and start charging for news online, risking smaller audiences for potential gains in subscription revenues.

FIFTY BILLION CONNECTED DEVICES

App stores -- online shops for small software applications that run anything from games to dictation tools to fitness aids on phones -- have proliferated since Apple (AAPL.O) launched the original App Store for the iPhone in 2008.

In the 18 months to January, consumers downloaded more than 3 billion iPhone applications, most of them free and the rest typically costing less than $1 each.

Despite the low price, high volumes mean the market will grow to $6.8 billion in 2010, IT research firm Gartner predicts. The software creators, whether newspaper publishers or geeks in their garage at home, get a 70 percent revenue share from Apple.

Sales of smartphones like the iPhone are forecast to grow by about 50 percent this year to 250 million units, compared with 20 percent growth to 366 million units for PCs.

New mobile connected devices like Amazon"s (AMZN.O) Kindle e-reader and the soon-to-be-launched Apple iPad tablet computer, aimed at a market somewhere between laptops and smartphones, will also increase the scale of the opportunity.

E-readers, still a nascent business, so far offer terms that publishers find friendlier than advertising-funded models.

Hans Vestberg, chief executive of mobile equipment maker Ericsson (ERICb.ST), repeated his prediction this week that there will be 50 billion connected devices by 2020.

"Mobile Web adoption is growing eight times faster than the first wave of PC Internet adoption," Google"s CEO Eric Schmidt told the conference this week. "There may be some limits, but we"re not anywhere near them."

ABERRATIONS

In China, more than half the nation"s Internet users -- who totaled 384 million by the end of last year -- are already accessing the Web from a mobile device, and Lee told Reuters that would grow to 800 million in five years.

China"s largest online retailer Taobao, part of leading e-commerce group Alibaba (1688.HK), plans to launch mobile phones preloaded with applications this year to bring more users to its online shops.

And, unlike its U.S. counterpart eBay (EBAY.O), it does not charge sellers to list items for sale, but funds operations through advertising -- although advertising will not be the answer to everything.

Lee also gave the example of a Chinese browser, gaining in popularity, that removes all visuals and advertising from Web pages to cut the bandwidth needed by cost-conscious consumers.

"These kinds of unusual aberrations will happen as a result of specific things that happen in each country, so if you want to develop your content for the whole world it"s important not to assume that the whole world is the same," he said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. food regulators announced a voluntary recall on Thursday of food made with a common flavoring that could be contaminated with salmonella bacteria but did not estimate how broad the recall will be.

The flavoring -- hydrolyzed vegetable protein -- is used in soups, sauces, hot dogs, snack foods, dressings and dips and is made by privately held Basic Food Flavors Inc of Las Vegas, Nevada.

"At this time there are no known illnesses associated with this contamination and obviously we"d like to keep it that way," FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg told reporters in a teleconference.

"The manufacturer had many first-level consignees who obviously had individuals who had firms that they sold to who sold to the other firms," said Dr. Jeff Farrar, associate commissioner for food safety at FDA"s Office of Foods.

"We expect this to get larger over the next several days, actually several weeks," Farrar said.

A handful of companies have recalled products ranging from dips, potato chips and dressings to tofu, burritos and pasta. They include T. Marzetti, a unit of Lancaster Colony Corp, which said on March 1 it was recalling various dips.

The FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Agriculture Department are working with Nevada state health officials on the outbreak, Hamburg told reporters.

Farrar said officials believe the risk to consumers is very low.

The FDA said it collected and analyzed samples at the Nevada facility and confirmed the presence of Salmonella Tennessee in the company"s processing equipment. The company is recalling all hydrolyzed vegetable protein in powder and paste form that it has produced since September 17, 2009.

Salmonella can cause severe illness in the very young, very old and frail. It causes fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain and in the most vulnerable can cause a bloodstream infection and organ failure.

The FDA, CDC and USDA are currently working with Congress to overhaul U.S. food safety regulation.

Deputy FDA Commission Dr. Joshua Sharfstein said this outbreak showed why new regulatory powers were needed.

"The shift in the food safety system that we can accomplish with the food safety legislation is one toward prevention and we would like to set strong preventive standards that keep contamination from occurring in the first place," he said.

Since 2006, the U.S. food supply has been battered by a series of high-profile foodborne outbreaks involving meat, lettuce, peppers, peanuts and spinach.

Contamination of peanuts with salmonella in 2009 forced the recall of 3,200 products and sickened 600 people.

This week, the Produce Safety Project reported that food poisoning costs the United States $152 billion in health-related expenses each year.

Many firms including Kellogg Co, whose company lost nearly $70 million in products from the recent peanut recall, and ConAgra Foods have been affected.

Trans fats might foster endometriosis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Women who eat lots of tuna, salmon and other foods rich in essential omega-3 oils might be less likely to develop endometriosis than those whose diets are loaded with trans fats, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

Endometriosis, which has no cure, can cause infertility. In endometriosis, pieces of the uterine lining grow outside the womb, sometimes sticking to other organs.

The type of fat in a woman"s diet, rather than the total amount, may be a risk factor for endometriosis, an often debilitating and painful condition, researchers said in a study published online in the journal Human Reproduction.

The study of more than 70,000 American nurses found that women who ate the most omega-3 fatty acids were 22 percent less likely to be diagnosed with endometriosis than women who ate the least.

Women who ate the most trans fats had a 48 percent increased risk of the condition compared with those who ate the least, the study found.

Trans fats are formed when liquid fats are hardened to make something more resembling butter or lard. And like the saturated fat in lard, they raise the likelihood of heart disease.

This study suggests they can also affect endometriosis risk.

"We know that trans fats increase the body"s level of many inflammatory markers and these are inflammatory factors that have been shown to be associated with establishment of endometriosis and progression," Dr. Stacey Missmer of Brigham and Women"s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, who led the study said in a telephone interview.

The risk is likely increased because of a chronic inflammatory response to the trans fat, Missmer said. interview.

She stressed that the this is the first study to show such an association but said more research is needed to confirm the results. Still, Missmer said study provides more evidence of the benefits of healthy eating habits.

"Many women have been searching for something they can actually do for themselves, or their daughters to reduce the risk of developing the disease, and these findings suggest that dietary changes may be something they can do," Missmer said in a statement.

The researchers looked at the diets of 70,709 women followed for 12 years in the U.S. Nurses Health Study. The types of fats the nurses ate were broken down into five categories and the researchers looked to see who later developed endometriosis.

Over the course of the study, 1,199 women did.

Most of the omega-3 fatty acids eaten by the nurses came from full-fat salad dressing, followed by fatty fish like tuna, salmon and mackerel. Walnuts and flaxseeds are also considered good sources.

Omega-3 fatty acids, considered essential for good health, can lower heart disease risk.

The major sources of trans fats in the study were fried foods from restaurants, margarine and crackers.
